In New Zealand, visiting the South Island is an experience that everyone should have. For a trip like this, the route is definitely your best option. To travel by road in a country like New Zealand, you can rent a camper or suited vehicle. With this, you will not depend on accommodations and you can change your plans spontaneously.
Of course, for all trips, the best thing is always to have some advice; and what better to prepare with the Advice of a Travel Expert.
You can start your New Zealand Trip in Christchurch on the east coast of the island. From here, head west on the scenic inland route that leads to Lake Tekapo. Enjoy the nature around you, and plan your time well, since you will surely stop often. This is because the landscapes are truly spectacular. Once you get to Lake Tekapo, find a good place, relax and wait for the sunset, you will not regret it.
Again on the road, continue towards Wanaka. On the way, make sure to deviate a bit towards Omarama and look at the clay cliffs. In Wanaka, you have the opportunity to visit the waterfalls with up to 14 meters high.
When you arrive in Queenstown you will do so through the stunning Cardrona Valley and Crown Range. Here your obligatory stop is the city. In addition, of course, there are also the famous Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu just around the corner, which may give you some time to get distracted.
The good thing about this place is the opportunity to take an excursion through the desert of Queenstown Hill in a safari. And for an adrenaline rush, you can jump out of a plane by parachute over Queenstown and the Remarkables. You can take advantage of a trip to the Milford Sounds, you can see the fjords, which are reminiscent of the fjords of Norway, but wilder.
3.Discovering Hasst and Franz Josef.
On the way to Haast, you pass through a small place called Hannah’s clearing. Here you have the opportunity to take a ride on a jet boat on the Waitoto River, which includes a brief tour of the jungle. From Haast it will be around 150 kilometers to Franz Josef, where you cannot miss the glacier walk of the same name.
On the way you reach Punakaiki. Here you can see the famous Pancake Rocks and horseback ride for a while. Then, you can go to Nelson and Abel Tasman National Park. In the park it is not allowed to drive a car, but there are water taxis or if you prefer you can go on foot.
Before heading to Marlborough Sounds, check out Golden Bay and its incredible beaches. The numerous small islands of Marlborough Sounds are ideal for all water sports, such as sea kayaking.
The last stop is Kaikoura. Here you will have the opportunity to observe dolphins and whales. Take a break of a long trip (more than 1,800 kilometers and somewhat around two and a half weeks) in one of its spas. Or simply enjoy the landscape and local cuisine.
